The Kingdom of Asailia is among the oldest of all the Kingdoms. This is reflected in their monarchy- one of the only kingdoms left in the world to be ruled solely by one king whose succession is secured with the birth of a male heir and who may or may not have an advisory council. To some outsiders, this old style of government marks Asailians as backwards people who are stuck in a bygone age. However, Asailians themselves view their culture as one rich with tradition which can be traced back to the Old Empires. Asailia is a monarchy whose kings may only be male and may only be human. Because of this, there is a very small population of any other race in the kingdom and has led to conflicts between humans and other races in the past. The second largest population in Asailia is half-elves who have their own quarter in the capital city. Less than 100,000 people live in the cities, which means that the vast majority of the population is rural or lives in one of the 36 towns.
The current monarch of Asailia is Asander Dimanan-im-Asail. In Asailia, bloodlines are maintained by the three part last name which indicates family and origin. In King Asander’s case, he is of the Dimanan bloodline, one of the oldest in Asailia which is indicated by the third part in the name. Asail means that the bloodline is old enough to claim ancestry from the first capital of Asaila which was named Asail. The second part of the name indicates the gender of the person in Old Asean. The two forms are “im” meaning male, and “em” meaning female (though the literal translation is not-male). It is important to note that only those who have royal ancestors or are considered “favored” by the ruling monarch may have a three part last name. Furthermore, only those who are able to trace and prove their lineage’s ancestral home can be considered for the throne. In this way, the Asailian government has never come under the rule of a foreign monarch or from one not native to Asailia.
